Getting started

Here’s how to get going the first time you open Vaultyn.

1. Set a master password

The master password is the only key to your vault — at least 8 characters. A sentence only you know, such as a few words strung together, works well: length matters more than complexity.

You can add a password hint to jog your memory, but the hint is stored unencrypted, so never put the password itself in it.

2. Save the recovery key

After you create the vault, Vaultyn shows a recovery key. It’s the only way to reset a forgotten master password.

  • It’s shown only once — write it down or print it, and keep it somewhere safe.
  • Keep it with your emergency sheet, for example in a home safe.

3. Choose a data folder

Vaultyn asks for a folder to store your encrypted data. To use several Macs, choose a folder inside iCloud Drive, Dropbox or another synced folder. See Data folder & iCloud sync.

4. Add accounts

Click + at the top right, choose a type (login, card, ID, Wi-Fi…), fill it in and save. Or bring everything over at once: see Import from other apps.

Everyday actions
